Love For The Litchards
"Your child has cancer" - Four words no parent ever wants to hear. For the Litchard family of Sunbury, this was their reality back in October of 2023. Alec, a 5th grader at Chief Shikellamy, who loves playing football and baseball, is currently undergoing treatment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for his recently diagnosed cancer.Â
His parents, Janelle and Brent, are by his side during this battle. Alec loves to be the center of attention and make his friends laugh at his jokes. Sports are a big part of Alec's life. He is a proud member of the Shikellamy Braves Youth football team where he plays both offense and defense. He also plays Little League baseball and is known for his sliding skills. When not on the sports field, Alec enjoys riding 4-wheelers and being outside with his dad and dog, Zeke.Â
Alec is a huge Dallas Cowboys and Penn State football fan and loves to wear his team's colors. Alec was injured during football season, which eventually led to his diagnosis of metastatic Ewing Sarcoma on October 24, 2023. Ewing Sarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer. He is undergoing intensive chemotherapy and treatments at the CHOP in Philadelphia. Alec has a long road ahead of him but is brave, strong, and fighting cancer with everything he has. Through all of this, Alec continues to keep his sense of humor, beautiful smile, and wants to make others laugh.Â
Here at W&L Subaru, one of our missions is to help our neighbors, so as soon as we heard about Alec and his story, we jumped into action. Our first step was to make sure Alec had something to keep him busy and his mind off treatments. A shopping spree outfitted Alec with games, puzzles, and comfy clothes in all of his favorite team's apparel.Â
Next, to help Alec's parents, W&L teamed up with Bucknell Mens & Womens basketball to donate money during the season based on free-throws. The money from the free-throws has been put to good use, says Janelle. The funds have helped offset the cost of travel, hotels, and boarding their dog, Zeke. In addition, the Bucknell Mens & Womens team signed and donated gear to Alec as a keepsake.Â
Continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Litchard family and as a community, we are rallying behind this brave, young man, and his family, as he continues to fight cancer.
